The tiny Indian Ocean island of Mauritius has long set the standard for tropical luxury holidays. Combining French, British and Creole cultures, and complete with textbook swaying palms, white sand beaches (some of the prettiest around we might add), and unspoilt reefs, it is one of the world’s top destinations for sophisticated yet relaxing holidays. Mauritius is so well geared to most people’s R&R requirements – catering for honeymooners and family holidays equally well.

- 90% of the island is home to sugar cane fields
- The dodo is the national bird of Mauritius, however it is now extinct

Luxury accommodation is peppered along the coast line, each as attractive as the next, and dangerously hospitable that you may never want to leave the island. Away from the pampered environs of your hotel, there’s also plenty to do for the non sun-worshipper – we can arrange diving in pristine coral gardens, snorkelling, sailing or sea kayaking for waterbabies.
Stunning beaches and world class hotels aside land-lubbers can play golf or visit the celebrated Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens (although we almost prefer the official name – Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens) and the colourful market in the capital Port Louis. Another tick in the Mauritius ‘pro’ column? It makes for an excellent ‘bush and beach’ combination with South Africa. Monday markets are by far the biggest on the island and perfect for browsing trinkets galore
